MIXTECA ALTA GEOPARK

The Mixteca Alta Geopark is located in the most complex geological region of Mexico, on the boundary of two tectonostratigraphic terrains, and is composed of Precambrian and Paleozoic metamorphic and plutonic rocks that make up the basement complex, composed of Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks, volcanic rock flows and continental sediments.

It is located in the Sierra Madre del Sur physiographic province, a mountainous region bounded to the north by the Mexican Volcanic Belt. It has some of the most important vestiges of Mesoamerican culture and is characterized by a variety of erosional forms strongly related to the traditional agriculture carried out more than 3500 years ago. Through these features, the relationship between geology and society is promoted among members of the general and specialized public. Geosites include gullies, badlands, erosional amphitheaters derived from fluvial processes and mass removal, alluvial deposits, paleosols, magmatic features and examples of spheroidal weathering.
