The Mixteca Alta Geopark project arose from the joint participation of local authorities, educational institutions and the local population in order to develop a scheme for the sustainable use of resources. On one hand it considers students of all levels to raise awareness of the extraordinary natural and social-historical heritage of the region and secondly, the general public through geotourism, conceived as a tool to contribute to the welfare of its inhabitants.
The project was born in the municipality of Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán, where the headquarters of the Geopark is located, and later joined by eight other municipalities.
Municipal authorities, the Commissariat of communal property and the general population are the managers of the project and its principal beneficiaries.
